When considering what types or organisations are likely to suffer a data breach in the next 12 months, Kiwis trust in telcos and banks the least but have higher levels of trust in health organisations and airlines to protect their data. Meanwhile, the level of comfort in organisations monitoring social media varies depending on the intended purpose with high support for national security but low support for marketing purposes.

  • Telco providers are the least trusted organisation to protect data with more than half of New Zealand consumers (53%) expecting a data breach at a telco in the next 12 months.
  • Airlines and healthcare organisations are the most trusted by Kiwis to protect data with 55% believing that a data breach is unlikely in the next year.
  • The majority of Kiwis are comfortable with organisations monitoring social media to detect possible terrorist activity and identify public issues and concern, but not to develop targeted advertising and special offers.
